Replacing the polymer guide rod for a stainless one could cause excess/premature wear. That sort of made sense to me, so I haven't changed it yet.

Martensitic stainless is harder than the 300 series steels; and most are magnetic, as i remember. That being said; my guess is that making a guide rod from 300 series stainless would be ok.
